Pro bono

Pro bono involves providing free legal work for the public good. We believe it is a fundamental professional responsibility of lawyers.

Our comprehensive pro bono programme covers a broad range of causes and organisations, reflecting the diverse interests of our people. To underline our commitment to pro bono work, we treat it as ‘billable’ work when lawyers’ hourly targets and budgets are considered. This ensures it is treated in the same professional way as work for fee-paying clients.

Our employees are fully engaged in pro bono activities. Clients include Save the Children, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Public International Law and Policy Group, and Caribbean Capital Cases.

Simon's story
“There is a huge amount of engagement with the pro bono programme across the firm. I have been involved since I was a trainee. I spent three months in our Chicago office on secondment. While there, I became involved with an organisation called the Public International Law and Policy Group, or PILPG, which is a global pro bono law firm providing free legal assistance to states and governments involved in conflicts.

I’ve continued that involvement back here in London, where I am on the Pro Bono Committee. The Committee promotes pro bono within the firm, draws up the strategy and identifies suitable clients. Initiatives include providing trademark advice for Save The Children, staffing a free employment law helpline and representing the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the supreme court."
